The 11th International James Joyce Conference in Korea
We warmly invite everyone interested in the works and legacy of James Joyce to the 2025 International James Joyce Conference in Korea.
Since hosting our first international conference in 2002, the James Joyce Society of Korea (JJSK) has held conferences nearly every two years. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we transitioned to online conferences over the past four years. We are now pleased to announce that, beginning this year, we are returning to in-person gatherings.
Joycean scholars from around the world—including Japan, China, Taiwan, and the United States—will participate in the conference, presenting their latest research and papers reflecting current trends in Joyce studies.
For many years, we have spoken of a broader crisis in the humanities—but few could have foreseen the extent of the current challenges facing English literature. Societies devoted to individual authors are disappearing or shrinking, and the number of published scholarly works is in decline. In this context, we hope this conference will serve as a resounding affirmation that Joyce studies remain vibrant and relevant.
The diverse range of papers presented by scholars from across the globe will demonstrate that it is far too early to abandon the study of James Joyce. When Ulysses was published, Joyce famously remarked, ¡°It will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant.¡± Now, just over a century since its publication, that prediction continues to hold true.
The fact that Joyce scholars from different countries interpret his works in different ways highlights precisely why we continue to study him. Each scholar brings a unique perspective and cultural context to Joyce¡¯s texts—reminding us that Joyce belongs not to one nation or tradition, but to the world.
We look forward to welcoming you to the conference. Should you need any assistance or have any inquiries, please feel free to contact us.
Warm regards,
